Can I rent Kambu Campers Vehicles?
Yes! We welcome any customers over the age of 25 who are legally allowed to drive in their resident country. You’ll need a valid driver’s license, credit card, and proof of insurance. When you rent our self-drive vehicles, including campervans, our engagement will be guided by the terms signed before you take off.
Please take note that our Cancellation Policy will be put into effect if you do not agree to the Driver Age, Payment, Driving Licences & history, Identification Required and Rental Payment Terms upon collecting your vehicle. If you are unable to fulfil the stated ID Requirements, please reach out to us before making a booking so we can figure out a solution together.
What is the Driver’s Age Requirement?
Anyone over the age of 25 with a valid driver’s license is welcome to rent one of our vehicles. All drivers must provide a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and an accepted form of payment prior to renting. A credit card may be required in order to rent from Kambu Campers.
I understand that most 25-year-olds may not have credit cards in Kenya as it is in other places such as the US and the UK. We do accept cash deposit in place of a credit card, but please make sure to contact us ahead of time regarding this option.
All drivers must be aged between 25 and 75 years old can rent our vehicles in any of our Kenyan locations including Nairobi, Kisumu, Nakuru, Mombasa and Eldoret. Drivers aged 21 – 24 years may only rent cars up to Standard category, Economy, and Short Wheel Base Vans. A daily charge (incl VAT) applies to drivers aged 21 – 24 and 70-75 inclusive. Drivers aged 21 – 23 must hold a full driving licence for a minimum of 36 months which is free of current endorsements. All other qualifications regarding age and vehicle type remain the same as above.
What Payment Options are Available?
We accept a variety of payment methods, including major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) and cash. All payments must be made prior to collecting your vehicle. Please note that all payments are non-refundable in the event of a cancellation or change of reservation.
Cancellation:
If you cancel your reservation within 12 hours of booking, we’ll give you a full refund minus any bank fees. If you cancel more than 24 hours from the time of booking and up to 92 hours before the date you want to pick up the car, some charges may apply.
If you cancel your car rental booking less than 48 hours from the pick-up date and time, no refund will be given. Also, please note that if you do not have the proper identification or payment/deposit at time of pick-up, or if you do not adhere to our Terms and Conditions in any way, we will not be able to proceed with the rental. In this case, no refund will be given. You may cancel by emailing us – we will then send a confirmation email of cancellation to you for your records.
Offline reservations:
You can cancel your car rental reservation at any point up to 96 hours before you’re scheduled to check out. To cancel, simply call or email us. However, if you wait until after this time frame has elapsed, we may charge your credit card according to the agreement made when first confirming the reservation–but no more than what the rental is worth.
If you do not come to pick the vehicle:
If you want to cancel your reservation, you must do so in accordance with the terms above. If you don’t collect your rental vehicle at the specified time on your voucher, no refund will be given. However, we’ll hold onto your rental car for 4 working hours after the original reserved time.

Fees:
All rentals come with insurance (damage liability subject to the vehicle), VAT, breakdown cover, and unlimited miles. We do not place a limit on the mileage.
Damage liability insurance:
Note that damage liability insurance deductibles vary by vehicle size, and though you can purchase a damage liability waiver for an additional cost, this option isn’t available to drivers aged 21-24 or 70-75. Additionally,glass and tire coverage is not included with rentals of luxury or Porsche vehicles but is charged for all other vehicles. Please be aware that the company reserves the right to withdraw the damage liability waiver at any time (e.g., due to extreme weather conditions).
Driving History:
If you are aged 25-75 and have had your license for at least 12 months, you qualify to rent a car from us. However, if you have been banned from driving or disqualified for 12 months+, we will only allow rentals 5 years after the return of your license. For drivers aged 21-24, they must have held their license for 24 months with no endorsements to be eligible.
Fuel Policy:
At the beginning of your rental, all vehicles come with a full tank of gas. You have three options for returning the vehicle:
1. Returning it empty after purchasing the gas at a discounted rate
2. Returning it full
3. Partially filling it up and being charged for missing fuel at the local determined price Please note that there will be an additional fee for this service
What about Driving Licences & History?
Rental Period:
As long as you keep the car for the time specified in your Reservation Confirmation, you’re fine. Returning it late or failing to contact us and get an extension will result in breaking this agreement.
If you keep the car longer than your specified return date, we will charge you for every day or part-day past the due date. The daily rate we charge is detailed in the rental agreement, and you might also have to pay additional mileage charges.
Rental Agreement:
You will be asked to sign a Rental Agreement when you collect your rental vehicle. An executed copy of the agreement will be scanned and shared via email. You can refer to the Agreement any time during your rental, as it outlines all the terms and conditions relating to your rental.
Renting safari vans from Kambu Campers – terms:
– All drivers must be aged 25 and above, with a valid driver’s license
– An International Driver’s Permit is required for non EU citizens.
– Drivers must have held a valid driver’s license for at least 12 months with no endorsements or bans.
– A full tank of gas comes with the vehicle and must be returned as such.
– All rental costs include insurance, VAT, breakdown cover and unlimited miles.
– No pets are allowed in the vehicles.
– A damage liability waiver is available at an additional cost (not available to drivers aged 21-24 or 70-75).
– Glass and tire coverage is not included with rentals of luxury or Porsche vehicles.
– Any damage to the vehicle must be reported immediately.
– No smoking is allowed in the vehicles.
– Return of the vehicle must be made within the specified time on your voucher, no refund will be given. However, we’ll hold onto your rental car for 4 hours after the pre-arranged return time without any extra charges.
– Any late returns will be charged an additional fee, as outlined in the rental agreement.
– All drivers must also agree to Kambu Campers terms and conditions before renting any vehicle.
Car Rental Requirements in Kenya:
Below are our requirements if you plan to rent a car in Kenya.
- You must be at least 25 years of age with a valid driving license
- You need to make a deposit of at least Kes. 50,000 – refundable when you return the car in good condition
- You need to provide proof of residence or an identity card
- You must have a major credit card and valid driver’s license
- A daily mileage charge may apply
- You must sign a rental agreement and pay the applicable fees
- You will be responsible for any fines or traffic violations that occur during your rental
The vehicle must be returned with a full tank of gas.
FAQs
Can I lease a car on a long-term basis?
Yes, you can lease a car on a long-term basis. We allow up to 3 months lease periods that are renewable with a valid driver’s license and credit card. Instead of the credit card, we also take refundable cash deposit. Our Nairobi office at Kisiwa Close handles all long-term car leases.
Do you accept international driving licenses?
Yes, we accept international driving licenses from most countries. We may request an International Driver’s Permit as well to accompany it.
Do I need to provide a deposit?
Yes, you will be required to make a refundable cash or credit card deposit. The amount depends on the type of car you choose and is specified in the rental agreement. We also accept major international credit cards as well as local ones.
Do you provide breakdown cover?
Yes, all our vehicles come with breakdown cover included in the rental fee. We have a 24-hour roadside assistance service in case of any mechanical issues during your rental period.
Can I take my rental car out of the country?
Yes, you can take your rental car out of the country. However, you must have written permission from the company to do so and additional charges may apply.
Can I hire a driver with the vehicle?
Yes, you can hire a driver with the vehicle. Additional charges will apply for this service and prior approval is required. All drivers must have valid credentials and be approved by Kambu Campers before they are allowed to drive any of our vehicles.
What type of fuel do I need to use?
You should only use the type of fuel specified in the owner’s manual for your vehicle. Failure to do so may result in additional charges or the voiding of insurance coverage.
How long can I rent the campervan?
You can rent the campervan for a minimum of two days and maximum of 14 days. If you need to extend your rental period, please contact us so we can discuss the available options.
How long can I rent self-drive vehicles in Nairobi?
You can rent self-drive vehicles in Nairobi for a minimum of one day and maximum of 30 days. If you need to extend your rental period, please contact us so we can discuss long-term lease options available.
Do I need special insurance to rent a car?
Yes, you need to obtain adequate insurance coverage when renting a car. We offer various types of insurance packages that you can choose from according to your needs. The cost of the insurance will be added to your rental fee.
