Day 1: Nairobi – Masai Mara (Cultural Immersion & Camp Activities)

Your adventure begins with an early morning pick-up in Nairobi in a transfer 2WD Toyota Minivan vehicle.

Toyota Noah

You can upgrade and use a 4WD Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof instead of the minivan for Nairobi-Mara transfer.

As you journey towards the Mara, you’ll enjoy a scenic stop at the Great Rift Valley Viewpoint, where you can admire the expansive escarpment stretching into the horizon. After another 1.5 hours, we’ll pause in Narok town at Narok Coffee House, a perfect spot for a short refreshment break before continuing.

Evening at Kambu Mara Camp

After the enriching cultural visit, we continue the 30-minute drive to Kambu Mara Camp, located closer to Maasai Mara National Reserve. Upon arrival, you can unwind, engage in camp activities, or relax by the campfire under the African night sky.

For those arriving later in the day, a late pick-up option from Nairobi (including the airport) is available. Guests who arrive late will forego afternoon activities and proceed directly to the camp.

If you’d like to include a half-day afternoon game drive on Day 1 instead of the cultural tour, we can tailor your itinerary accordingly. Otherwise, you’ll be well-rested and ready to embark on a full-day game drive the next day.

Due to the recent increase in Maasai Mara National Reserve park fees, this itinerary is designed to maximize value for your money by ensuring you purchase a single park ticket on Day 2 while still enjoying a fulfilling experience on Day 1. By engaging in an enriching cultural tour on the first day, you avoid paying for park tickets twice (on both Day 1 and Day 2), allowing you to fully optimize your visit and dedicate your park entry to an extended game drive experience the following day.

Day 2: Full-Day Masai Mara Game Drive

The day starts with an early 6:00 a.m. entry through Sekenani Gate, allowing you to take advantage of the cool morning hours when predators are most active. From the gate, your driver-guide proceeds along the Sekenani–Talek plains, a classic big-cat zone where lions, cheetahs, and spotted hyenas are often seen moving back to resting sites after nocturnal hunts. You may have a stop for sunrise pictures at Kisinja Plains at around 6:40 AM.

From this open grassland system, the route gradually arcs north-west toward the Talek River, following game paths frequently used by elephants, buffalo, giraffes, and large herds of plains game. The riverine edges are prime leopard territory, and the early morning light here is ideal for photography. You’ll stop at Talek Gate for bathroom break at around 9 AM.

As the morning progresses, the drive opens into the vast Paradise Plains, one of the most scenic and productive areas of the reserve. These rolling savannahs are favored by cheetahs and are often dotted with large concentrations of wildebeest and zebra. From here, you continue toward Lookout Hill, stopping briefly to take in a panoramic view of the Mara landscape—a useful vantage point for understanding animal movements across the plains. Optional stop at the Lookout Hill washrooms at around 11 AM to 12 PM.

Late morning is dedicated to the Mara River corridor, including a stop near the Mara River Bridge, a strategic crossing point that offers excellent visibility of hippo pods, crocodiles, and seasonal migration routes.

At the Mara River Bridge, you’ll enjoy a short guided walk along the Mara River, accompanied by an armed ranger. This controlled walk allows for close observation of hippos, crocodiles, and riparian birdlife while learning more about the river’s ecological importance within the greater Mara–Serengeti ecosystem.

A picnic lunch is served at a carefully chosen scenic location overlooking the river or open plains, providing time to relax while remaining immersed in the wilderness. You can have the picnic lunch at Mara River Bridge picnic tales with shades or choose another location near the Bridge before onward game drive.

When conditions allow, the drive continues further west toward the remote Kenya–Tanzania border region, an area with reduced vehicle density and excellent chances of encountering elephants, eland, and large buffalo herds.

The afternoon game drive continues through the western Mara plains and river loops, focusing on late-day predator activity and birdwatching opportunities, including fish eagles, kingfishers, vultures, and ground-nesting species. As the sun begins to set, the route gradually loops back toward the Sekenani sector.

You’ll return to Kambu Mara Camp shortly after sunset, where a campfire awaits—an ideal setting to unwind, share sightings from the day, and reflect on a thoughtfully planned, expert-led safari that showcases the Masai Mara at its best.

After a leisurely breakfast, you’ll depart Kambu Mara Camp at 9:00 a.m., heading back to Nairobi. Along the way, you have an optional stop at a Maasai Curio and Gifting Shop near Narok to pick up souvenirs.

If you’d like to visit a Maasai village before departing for Nairobi, you can hire a local taxi (Toyota Probox) for KES 5,000 (about $40) for a round trip to the village. Alternatively, if you prefer a Land Cruiser, we can arrange this for $80. Please note, this is in addition to the $30–$40 per person entrance fee paid directly to the village. The Maasai village visit can also be arranged on your first day—just let our staff know at check-in if you’re interested.

You’ll arrive back in Nairobi by early afternoon, concluding an unforgettable Masai Mara budget safari experience.

Day 2: Full-Day Masai Mara Game Drive & Mara River Walk

The day starts with an early 6:00 a.m. entry through Sekenani Gate, allowing you to take advantage of the cool morning hours when predators are most active. From the gate, your driver-guide proceeds along the Sekenani–Talek plains, a classic big-cat zone where lions, cheetahs, and spotted hyenas are often seen moving back to resting sites after nocturnal hunts. You may be lucky to see the Marriot Pride (coalition of 12 lions with little cubs).

From this open grassland system, the route gradually arcs north-west toward the Talek River, following game paths frequently used by elephants, buffalo, giraffes, and large herds of plains game. The riverine edges are prime leopard territory, and the early morning light here is ideal for photography.

Late morning is dedicated to the Mara River corridor, including a stop near the Mara River Bridge, a strategic crossing point that offers excellent visibility of hippo pods, crocodiles, and seasonal migration routes. When conditions allow, the drive continues further west toward the remote Kenya–Tanzania border region, an area with reduced vehicle density and excellent chances of encountering elephants, eland, and large buffalo herds.

A picnic lunch is served at a carefully chosen scenic location overlooking the river or open plains, providing time to relax while remaining immersed in the wilderness.

After lunch, you’ll enjoy a short guided walk along the Mara River, accompanied by an armed ranger. This controlled walk allows for close observation of hippos, crocodiles, and riparian birdlife while learning more about the river’s ecological importance within the greater Mara–Serengeti ecosystem.

Day 3: Full-Day Masai Mara Game Drive – Eastern & Southern Plains Circuit

  • 06:00 a.m. early entry via Sekenani Gate, heading east and southeast to avoid overlap with the previous day’s western route
  • Traverse the eastern Mara including Siana locality, an open, low-traffic area ideal for cheetahs, bat-eared foxes, jackals, topi, and large herbivore herds. Your guide will get you to the ‘Golf Plains’ lookout spot. This may not be official name but the landscape gives you a totally different perspective of the Day 2 excursion. You’ll enter through KWS Research path towards the gaps between two small hills. This is all before 9 AM.
  • Continue south toward the Sand River system, a prime wildlife corridor characterized by rugged rocky outcrops, dense riverine thickets, and consistently high lion and leopard activity. Follow the river all the way to Sand River Gate, where you can stop briefly to photograph the iconic boulder bearing the inscription “Serengeti Shall Not Die”—a symbolic landmark marking the ecological continuity between the Masai Mara and the Serengeti.
  • Explore the southern Mara border zone near the Kenya–Tanzania boundary, a quieter sector with elephants, eland, and expansive savannah views.
  • Proceed south-east toward the Black Rock escarpment, an area well known to professional guides for its resident Black Rock lion pride. This territory frequently hosts a large coalition of approximately 10 lions, dominated by impressive, dark-maned males, which are often seen resting along the rocky outcrops or patrolling the surrounding plains—making it one of the more reliable locations for observing mature male lions in the central Masai Mara.
  • Picnic lunch at a scenic spot at Roan Hills. This area was once popular with the endangered Roan Antelope but hasn’t been spotted in the recent past. Most animals roaming Roan Hills now are Rhinos but also occassionally.
  • Afternoon drive looping north through the southern and southeastern plains, focusing on late-day predator movement and wide-angle landscape photography
  • Gradual return through the Sekenani plains as temperatures cool and wildlife activity increases
  • Exit the reserve in the early evening and return to Kambu Mara Camp for a relaxed evening at camp

You can finish your game drive early and engage in other activities such as:

  • Visit a Maasai village ($30–$40 per person). For round-trip transport to the village from the camp, you can hire a local taxi (Toyota Probox) for KES 5,000 (about $40), or opt for a Toyota Land Cruiser for $80.
  • Take a short bush/nature walk in the area sorrounding the camp accompanied by staff Nelson or Simon.
  • Take a longer guided walk with rangers at Nashulai Conservancy ($20 p.p)
  • Explore the Maasai Beads Museum in Sekenani to discover East Africa’s rich beadwork culture ($5 per person)

Fees for the activities above are not included in the quote for this package.

You can customize this package to eliminate the game drive on the third day – only going on safari on Day 2.

After breakfast, you’ll depart Kambu Mara Camp at 9:00 a.m., heading back to Nairobi. Along the way, you have an optional stop at a Maasai Curio and Gifting Shop near Narok to pick up souvenirs.

You’ll arrive back in Nairobi by early afternoon.

More Masai Mara Safaris

Masai Mara Camping Safaris

The Masai Mara is one of the world’s most iconic safari destinations, and at Kambu Campers, we’re proud to offer you the ultimate experience in exploring this natural wonder. Known for its incredible wildlife density and the annual Great Migration, the Masai Mara is a must-visit for anyone seeking adventure, stunning landscapes, and up-close wildlife encounters. Our expertly guided safaris at Kambu Campers are designed to provide you with a seamless, enriching, and authentic journey into this untamed wilderness.

Best Time to Visit the Masai Mara

The Masai Mara is a year-round destination, but timing your visit right can enhance your experience. The dry season, from June to October, is ideal for spotting wildlife as animals gather around water sources. During these months, the plains are easier to navigate, and the weather is perfect for long game drives. However, the crown jewel of Masai Mara safaris is witnessing the Great Migration, when over 1.5 million wildebeest and thousands of zebras and gazelles make their dramatic journey across the Mara River between July and October. If you’re more interested in lush landscapes and fewer crowds, the wet season (November to May) offers a unique beauty and excellent birdwatching opportunities.

Types of Safaris in the Masai Mara

At Kambu Campers, we offer a range of safari experiences tailored to your interests and adventure level.

Our guided game drives are the heart of the Masai Mara safari experience. We use 4×4 Land Cruisers specifically modified for safari conditions, providing comfort, safety, and unrivaled viewing opportunities.

Hot Air Balloon Safaris

For a truly magical perspective, nothing compares to a hot air balloon safari over the Masai Mara at sunrise. Floating above the vast savannah, you’ll see the wildlife in a way few others experience. This is particularly spectacular during the migration when you can watch the herds from above. Our team can assist with booking this once-in-a-lifetime adventure as part of your safari package.

Walking Safaris

For those seeking a more immersive experience, we offer walking safaris led by Maasai guides. Walking safaris bring you closer to the land and offer an intimate look at the smaller details of the ecosystem, including plants, insects, and tracks left by the animals. It’s a truly humbling experience to walk alongside wildlife with only your guide’s expertise to rely on.

Cultural Safaris

At Kambu Campers, we believe that a visit to the Masai Mara is incomplete without exploring the rich culture of the Maasai people. We offer cultural safaris where you can visit local Maasai villages, interact with community members, and learn about their traditions, history, and way of life. It’s a wonderful opportunity to understand the deep connection between the Maasai and the land they protect.

Packing Essentials

Kenya’s weather can be unpredictable, so pack layers, comfortable shoes, sun protection, and a good camera for wildlife photography. Binoculars are also highly recommended for spotting distant animals.

Visa, Health, and Safety Tips

To enter Kenya, you’ll need a valid visa, which can easily be obtained online. Make sure your vaccinations are up to date, and we advise taking malaria prophylaxis if you’re traveling during the wet season. Our guides are trained in safety protocols to ensure your safari is not only fun but safe.

Unique Experiences in the Masai Mara

Witnessing the Great Migration

The Great Migration is one of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural events. Between July and October, the migration peaks with the dramatic river crossings, where herds of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles brave crocodile-infested waters. The best locations to witness this are the Mara River and Sand River, and our guides ensure you’re in the perfect spot to see this spectacle unfold.

Night Game Drives

Experience the Mara after dark with our night game drives, where you’ll see nocturnal animals like hyenas, leopards, and porcupines. Night drives are a thrilling way to observe how the savannah comes alive under the stars.

Sustainability and Conservation Efforts

Kambu Campers is committed to responsible tourism and helping preserve the Masai Mara for future generations. We support local conservation efforts, and all our safaris are eco-friendly. We encourage our guests to choose lodges and camps that share these values and to practice responsible wildlife viewing by keeping a safe distance and minimizing waste.
