About Car Rental Services with Driver in Nairobi:

In Nairobi, you have a wide selection of automobile rentals to choose from, ranging from small sedans to large Landcruisers. There are more than 10 reputable car hire companies in Nairobi providing excellent rental services. However, it’s important to be cautious as there may be a few dishonest rental companies with unclear pricing and terms, hoping to take advantage of travelers who overlook the fine print in lengthy contracts. Often these unscrupulous car rental firms have no physical offices in Nairobi and may only advertise on classified sites such as Jiji(olx) and do not provide their prices or clear terms of service.

How Kambu Campers Car Rental Services Got Started: READ MORE

Kambu Campers arose from this frustration to find a good company to rent a car in Nairobi with a driver. Our founders were in search of a car rental from Nairobi to Masai Mara and back. Unfortunately, the limited online options they found were exorbitantly priced, lacked proper customer support, offered no roadside assistance, provided unskilled drivers, and ultimately resulted in unexpected insurance fees that were hidden in their fine-print terms.

3 Kenya Safari Car Rental Vehicle Options to Pick with Private Drivers:

Landcruiser: 8-seater:

If you prefer a more spacious and more comfortable ride and don’t mind the cost, renting a Landcruiser with a private driver is a suitable option for couples and families looking to explore Kenya in style.

With its 8-seater capacity, the Landcruiser offers plenty of room for passengers and luggage. The vehicle is equipped with comfortable reclining seats, air conditioning, and a spacious interior to ensure a pleasant driving experience.

If you are traveling during the period of long rains (from late March and April) or during short-rain season of November, consider getting a Land Cruiser as they are better than Hiace safari vans when navigating muddy roads that at times flood.

Due to the effects of global warming, the predictability of rainfall in Kenya has become increasingly uncertain. Even in mid-January, the Masai Mara National Reserve is currently experiencing unprecedented flooding which is uncommon for this time of year. If you discover that your planned destination is experiencing rainfall, it is advisable to choose a land cruiser for your safety and convenience.

For individuals participating in specialty safaris like photographers or birders, Landcruisers with open sides provide superior viewing and the ability to mount cameras, resulting in exceptional photographs. In contrast, safari vans lack open sides and do not offer the same advantages.

The Hiace can accommodate up to 8 passengers (7 in the rear and 1 in the front), but we have equipped it with only 6 seats (5 in the rear and 1 in the front) to make room for a secondary battery, and a cabinet. This cabinet houses essential items like water containers and a first-aid kit, small tap, and provides additional storage space. The mini-fridge also sits on top of the cabinet.

Our Safari Van is Convertible with Customizable Seating
Our safari van has been designed to transition effortlessly into a campervan, featuring a detachable bed for versatile use. Removing the campervan bed allows for the quick installation of up to 5 seats in the back, arranged in a 3-2 configuration, in under 10 minutes. For bigger groups, there’s the option to remove the cabinet and install 7 seats(3-2-2). For groups under 5, you are able to retain several campervan amenities, including a sink with a mechanized tap, a gas cooker(night not be necessary), a secondary battery, a mini-fridge, a compact cabinet for storage, and various accessories such as portable camping chairs. This design ensures that you can tailor the space to your group’s size and needs, blending comfort and functionality seamlessly for your adventure.

Safari vans excel in navigation with its superior 4×4-drive-mode capabilities. Unlike Landcruisers, which require engagement of 4WD mode in rough terrain, safari vans have all wheels powered by 4×4 drive mode at all times.

Whether you’re navigating the winding roads to national parks or tackling rough terrains, our safari vans can handle it all with ease. The added benefit of having a driver means you can sit back, relax and enjoy your journey without any worries about driving on unfamiliar roads.

Why Consider Chauffeur Car Hire?

The key reason to pick a rental car option with a driver in Kenya is because of poor road conditions within National Parks and Reserves especially during rainy seasons. Rainy periods can limit your road navigation options and having a local driver with knowledge of the best alternative routes makes it safer and more convenient for you. You won’t have to deal with any unforeseen challenges on your journey, and can just sit back and relax while enjoying the scenic views.

Additionally, our drivers are familiar with the best camping spots and can help you plan out your itinerary to make the most of your trip. They can also recommend activities and attractions along the way based on your interests, ensuring a personalized experience for you.

Rental Vehicle Checklist: Preparing for a Smooth Safari Experience

Vehicle Age

In Kenya, you can easily know the age of a vehicle by their registration number. A vehicle starting with KC or KD are those manufacturered after 2010 and should still be in good condition. Vehicles with registration numbers starting with KA or KB can be 3 decades old and do not recommend hiring them even with the best driver on the wheels.

Vehicle Maintenance

Ask you driver or the rental company about how often the vehicle go for comprehensive check-up focusing on the engine, brakes, fluid levels (oil, brake fluid, coolant), and battery. The Land Cruiser’s robust build is ideal for rough terrains, but ensuring everything is in top-notch condition is key

Tire Condition and Spare

Flat tires are the most common cause of disruptions to your schedule. Inform your rental agency that you require your Hiace or Land Cruiser to come equipped with all-terrain tires in pristine condition. We consistently rely on Comforser tires, which have never let us down. Given the 4×4’s capability to navigate difficult terrains, it’s essential to have at least 2 spare tires, jack, and tire iron on hand.

Off-road Accessories

If traveling doing rainy reason such as the month of April, make sure your guided Safari rental vehicle is equiped with essential off-road accessories such as a winch, tow rope, and sand mats or boards for additional traction in sandy or muddy conditions. You never know when you’ll need them. This is especially very crucial if you plan on visiting during rainy reason when some Park roads can become muddy and difficult to navigate.

Complete Safety Kit

Insist on your vehicle having a comprehensive first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and an emergency beacon or satellite phone, especially useful in remote areas where cell service is unavailable. At Kambu, we go an extra mile by insuring our clients with AMREF’s emergency evacuation cover – a service provided to tourists visiting Kenya.

Navigation Tools:

While the Land Cruiser is designed to navigate through the toughest landscapes, having GPS navigation and physical maps of the area is advisable.

Comfort Enhancements

Go for a Land Cruiser with a cooler/mini-fridge for refreshments as unrefrigerated drinks can get really warm. Some vehicles also have window shades which you can request to protect from the sun especially if you’re visiting during the dry sunny periods of July to September.
